Your Audience – Who They Are and What They Want

It’s critical for the success of your business to know who your audience is.

These are the clients you’ll want to attract so you’ll need to structure your marketing strategies, both online and offline, to attract their attention. If you don’t know who your audience is, what they want, what they need, your marketing strategies will fail.

Identify Your Audience

Who is your Ideal Client? If you are starting your business, make a list of the type of clients you’d like to work with. Be specific about the industries of the clients you want to attract. What do they do? Who do they serve? What could you offer this group that would benefit them? If you’ve already developed products and services, determine who your offerings will benefit most and whether your services need to be improved, changed, or include more Value Added features to appeal to your audience.

Audience Demographics & Psychographics

What are the demographics of your audience?  What’s their age, education, sex, location, etc? Analyze the psychographics of a group by considering their personalities and characteristics, such as their lifestyle, attitudes, and values. Would they be interested in your product or service? Would it benefit them? Narrow your list to determine who your target audience is.

Hangout Where Your Audience Does – And Listen

Once you’ve identified your audience, look for them offline, online and on social media and follow them. Hangout on the same social networks your audience is. Join their groups (if they are not private or closed groups) and LISTEN. What are their needs? What are their pain points? How can you help solve them? This type of information becomes valuable as you develop products and services that will appeal to your Ideal Client.

What Does Your Audience Want?

As you become more familiar with their wants, needs and desires, you’ll be in a better position to create products and services that will appeal to them as well as content and information that will help them which will help you promote your offerings.

You can ask them questions to get to know them better. Post a question or conduct a survey in a group they are a member of. Write an interesting blog post that relates to their industry.

Who Are the Influencers?

Once you get to know your audience, you should be able to find the influencers. These are the people who are considered to be the experts or authorities of the group or industry.

If you create relevant and interesting content directed to your audience’s influencers, you may be recognized by one of them. A positive nod by an influencer could result in your content becoming read and shared among your audience, enhancing your visibility with your audience.

Being engaged in your audience’s online conversations and offering solutions will make you more visible to your audience and possibly their influencers. Following your audience will help you learn more about what they need or desire which will give you a better understanding of products and services that will appeal to them.
