Tips to Manage Blog Comments

One of the challenges in effectively managing a blog is deciding which comments you can accept and which ones should be deleted. Many bloggers and website owners who are new to WordPress find this to be a difficult or somewhat confusing task. Comments that are obviously spam can be deleted after a quick review and with little hesitation. But some comments may fall into a grey area. So how should you manage your blog comments?

1st Layer of Defense – Anti-Spam for Automated Comment Spam

Automated comment spam is easily recognizable and there are tools that can help you efficiently manage your comments by reducing the amount of spam you receive. You should have an anti-spam tool installed on your blog. Many WordPress users opt for the Askimet anti-spam plugin for their WordPress blogs. The Askimet plugin is free to use for personal and non-business blogs but business, non-personal blog users be charged starting at $5.00 per month or more.

Other anti-spam plugins options that are in the marketplace which are currently free are “Anti-Spam Bee” and “NoSpamNX”.

Other Types of Spam

These are self-promotional messages that are generated manually by hand. These usually will not get caught by anti-spam plugins. Review all comments and consider deleting the comment if:

  • it has one or more links in the body text that is not relevant to your post or one that really doesn’t add any value to your site;
  • the body text of the comment has nothing to do with your post or page;
  • the body content was used in a previous comment or if you receive the same comment more than once from the same person;

Many of the comments you receive will have a backlink embedded in the person’s name and website. Decide whether to keep or delete these comments based on the content of their comments. If the comment is adding value to your post or site, then keep or approve it. Use your discretion for those who are leaving generic comment just to get a backlink.

Remember, many of your followers who genuinely enjoy your posts and will appreciate being able to add to the discussion with a comment will likely include their URL because they want a backlink to their site. That alone is not a bad thing.

Comments That Disagree or Dispute

If your readers disagree with what you’ve written, don’t delete the comment solely because they have a different opinion or point of view than you do. They obviously care about the topic to take time to read about it and write a dissenting comment. They may return to read your posts again and if you write something they like, these readers can turn into your fans or your customers. If you delete their comment after they’ve taken their time to read what you’ve written and then write their opinion, you’ll lose them forever.

Blacklist Words

You have the capability to blacklist words and phrases that are known as spam in the Discussion Section of your WordPress admin section. I’d recommend blacklisting certain words such as Viagra, etc to help eliminate those comments also.

To review the basic tips to manage your blog comments:

  1. Approve Comments that are relevant, or add value, insights or opinions to your blog or to your site.
  2. Delete Comments that are irrelevant, detract value, or that are purely self-promotional from people who clearly didn’t read what you wrote.
